Metelkova Mesto

Metelkova Mesto, a former military barracks turned alternative epicentre, has transformed into a thriving autonomous culture centre. Originally constructed in 1911 by the Austro-Hungarian Army, this unique site encompasses seven barracks buildings spread across a little over three acres of land.

For many years, the military utilised this enclosed neighbourhood until 1991, when Slovenia gained independence from Yugoslavia and the army abandoned the premises. Shortly after, a wave of squatters began to occupy the vacant space, infusing it with their own creativity and individuality.

Today, the buildings within Metelkova are adorned with vibrant graffiti, folk art, intricate tile mosaics, weird sculptures, and thought-provoking punk rock statements. These structures now house an array of establishments, including clubs, bars, galleries, libraries, NGOs, art studios, and even a hostel.

The centre also serves as a hub for art performances, exhibitions, and occasional festivals, all while being defined by its captivating street art, encompassing graffiti, sculptures, and various installations. With its dynamic program of events, it attracts a diverse crowd, ranging from students and underground music enthusiasts to visitors of Ljubljana and professionals seeking a memorable night out.
